WHAT DOES TAKING GUARD IN CRICKET MEAN? OR WHAT IS BATTING GUARD?

It means marking the place, where you want to stand on the crease in relation to the stumps while batting. If you are taking a leg-stump guard you should align the front of your shoes with the leg stump. Taking the guard is the first activity a batsman does when he comes out to the crease to bat.


WHY DOES BATSMAN TAKE GUARD?

A Batsman marks the guard to make sure that he is standing at the same position for all the deliveries in an over or innings.

This helps them to analyze the line of the ball about the stumps and helps them to leave the balls bowled outside the line of the stumps which the batsman finds very difficult to play.

For becoming a great test player you should be able to leave balls that will not give you a chance to score runs but can take your wicket through edge catches. Taking guard helps batsmen to avoid such deliveries which pitch outside the off stump.

 Guard should be taken especially when you are playing against swing bowlers because the line of the ball changes after pitching on the ground so you need to know where you are standing to understand the line of the ball easily. 


WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF GUARD?

1)LEG-STUMP GUARD: A leg stump guard is taken when you want to align the front of your shoes with the leg stump. This guard is taken by a batsman who wishes to play more shots to the offside.

2)MIDDLE STUMP GUARD: A middle stump guard is taken when you want to align the front of your shoes with the middle stump.Taking this guard help batsman to play to both sides of the ground. The disadvantage of this position is that there is a higher chance of getting out through LBW.

3)MIDDLE AND LEG STUMP GUARD: It is when you want to align the front of your shoes at the middle of the leg stump and middle stump. This guard is taken when a batsman didn't want to be too close to the leg stump but wish to play shots to offside.


HOW TO COMMUNICATE WHICH GUARD TO TAKE TO THE UMPIRE? OR HOW TO ASK FOR GUARD IN CRICKET

It is not easy for a batsman to draw the perfect guard while standing in front of the stump. So he can ask the umpire to make sure that he is standing at a particular guard line. The following ways are used to signal where he wishes to take his guard.

1)leg stump: You can either call out "leg stump" or can show one finger.☝️


2)Middle stump: You can either call out "middle stump" or can show three fingers but it's difficult to show three fingers if you are wearing a batting glove.

3)Middle of middle and leg stump: You can either call out or can show two fingers ✌️


HOW TO TAKE GUARD IN CRICKET?

1)First you must get the strike. There is no need to take guard if you are a none striker.

2)Decide which guard you want to take and place the bat in front of the stump or area where you want to mark your guard. The face of the bat should be facing the point fielder.

3)Next you need to call out or show signs of the guard you wish to take to the umpire.

5)If the umpire confirms that your bat is correctly placed at the position where you want to take guard then mark the guard with the help of the spike of your shoes.

6)Align the front of your shoes with the guard line while taking your stance.
