Cricket is a very complex game and it is very difficult to understand many terms and rules relating to it especially if you are a beginner. The draw is one such term in cricket that is very confusing for a beginner. The main problem people face while trying to understand draw is that they often confuse it with tie.

In this article firstly we are going to discuss about what is draw in cricket. But knowing what is draw is not enough to get better clarity about it. For getting a better understanding of what is "a drawn match", you should also know the difference between the draw and tie. Even if the general meaning of draw and tie is the same when it comes to cricket both these words are awfully different. So let's dive deep into the subject.

WHAT IS A DRAW IN CRICKET?

The draw is a term used in test cricket to declare the result of the game when even at the end of the 5th day no result has been produced. A match is considered to have produced no result in the following situation:

1) Both teams have not completed(an innings is complete when all the wickets of a team have fallen or when the innings is declared by the captain of the batting team) playing their 1st and 2nd innings.

2)when the team following a target in the 4th innings failed to achieve it and the bowling team failed to take all the wickets of them.

Another important thing regarding draw is that the score of both teams need not be the same to declare the match as a draw. and it is not possible(applicable) to declare a draw in a limited-overs match.

The draw was very common in test cricket before the 2000s because during the initial years of professional cricket batsmen always tried to defend the ball and protect the wicket instead of driving and hitting it and most runs were scored by running between the wickets. In modern cricket, draws are very infrequent due to the attacking style of batting.

What happens when a world test championship final becomes a draw?

If a World Test Championship final ends in a draw the trophy will be shared among both the teams. It means that both teams will be crowned as champions. There will be no additional day's play if the WTC final becomes a draw.

EXAMPLES FOR DRAW

1st EXAMPLE: Imagine South Africa, is playing a test match against New Zealand and South Africa won the toss and scored 350 in their 1st innings. Then New Zealand was playing their 1 St innings and scored 200 for a loss of 5 wickets and at that time the game was stopped due to rain and the rain continued to pour and the game wasn't continued for the remaining days and the 5 days schedule ended.

So the game will be declared as a draw because only the 1st inning of South Africa was completed. For a game to have a result(win, loss, or tie) all 4 innings needed to be completed.

2nd EXAMPLE: Imagine that Srilanka is playing a test match against Australia and Srilanka won the toss and opted to bat and they scored 320 in their 1 St innings. Then AUS played their 1 St innings and scored 300.

Then Srilanka scored 280 in their second innings and achieved a total lead of 300. Now it's the chance of AUS to play their 4th innings but there is only one day remaining. The game will be declared as drawn if Srilanka doesn't bowl out Australia at the end of the 5th day and AUS has not managed to get 301 runs for a win or 300 for a tie.

3rd EXAMPLE: Imagine Bangladesh is playing against Ireland. Bangladesh score 350 in their 1st innings and Ireland only managed to score 50 in their 1 St innings so Bangladesh called for a follow on and Ireland scored 450 in their second inning now Bangladesh need  151 runs to win the match but it's the last day and Bangladesh only managed to score 120 at the loss of 5 wickets at the end of the day so the match will be declared drawn.

IN TEST CRICKET

A test match is considered a tie when at the end of all four innings the total score of both the teams is precisely the same. and the team that played the 4th inning must have got all-out.

Example: Imagine India is playing a test match against England. India won the toss and scored 220 in their 1st innings and later England scored 200 in their 1st innings and when India completed their 2nd innings they scored 300 runs and the match will be declared a tie if England gets all out when their second innings score is exactly 320.

IN LIMITED-OVERS MATCH

A limited-overs cricket match will be declared as a tie when at the end of the innings of the chasing team the score is equal to the 1st innings score of the opponent. In limited-overs cricket, an innings is said to be ended :

1) when the team becomes all out.

Or

2) when 50 overs is completely bowled if it is an ODI match and  20 overs is completely bowled if it is a T20 match.

RESULTS OTHER THAN TIE AND DRAW.

1) WIN OR LOSS

In a test match, the team with the highest score at the end of all 4 innings will be declared the winner, and the team with the lesser score will be declared as the loser

In limited-overs cricket, the team with the highest total score after both innings have completed will be declared the winner and the opposition will be declared as the loser.

2)WIN OR LOSS AFTER TIEBREAKER

In limited-overs cricket, if both teams score the same runs, sometimes a tiebreaker is used. There are mainly two types of tiebreakers, bowl-out and super over.

Bowl out is not commonly used during present days and Super over is the most commonly used tiebreaker. A match won through a tie-breaker is recorded as tied and won and a match lost after a tie-breaker is recorded as tied and lost.

3) AWARDED

An umpire can award a win to a team in extremely rare situations. An umpire can award a win to the opposition if a team concedes defeat or refuses to play the remaining match.

4)NO RESULT

If a limited-overs match was not able to be completed after the match has played for atleast one ball then it is considered to have no result. It has the same effect as a draw. It might have not continued due to rain or lack of light. If a match was stopped playing due to rain it's recorded as washed out.

For a limited-overs match to have a result it needs to be played for at least a certain number of overs. In ODI cricket each team might have had the opportunity to play for atleast 20 overs and in T20 cricket each team might have had the opportunity to play for atleast 5 overs. If each team had played for  the prescribed minimum number of overs then the result will be calculated through Duckworth Luis Method(DLS)

5)MATCH ABANDONED

If a match is canceled due to rain or other weather conditions even before the opening bowler had started his run-up then such games will be declared abandoned

The difference between abandoned and no result is that games with no result will be recorded in the official statistical record of ICC or in the official statistical record of the governing body if it is a domestic match. But abandoned games will not be recorded in the official statistical records.

6)CONCEDED

A Match is said to be conceded when one team accepts defeat and concedes loss to the opposition.

MOST COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS
